Growing up, I always called myself a “Christian”, but I never actually knew what that meant.
I was a good kid, though… Right?
In the 8th grade I threw away my virginity and repeatedly had sex with the same girl even after a 2 month long pregnancy scare. Yea, I was almost a father in the 8th grade. Things finally ended between her and me, and my brother invited me to church. I got saved…and things were going good. Well, kind of good if you overlooked my secret porn addiction.
Things went south at the church and we both left with church hurt. My brother dropped the title “Christian” altogether, but I remained a “Christian” who didn’t need to go to church to be saved… Riiiiiight… So I got another girlfriend, this time moving much faster physically. I would guilt trip her into doing more with me sexually by claiming she must’ve thought I was repulsive if she wouldn’t perform the tasks I wanted. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I cheated on her…. Yea, I was THAT messed up…
Finally, one of my friends, Graham, invited me to his church one day saying I could join the youth band on guitar, which I LOVE to play. Well, what I wasn’t expecting was to fall utterly, totally, and OBSESSIVELY in love with Jesus! Not long after, I got tired of “straddling the fence” and told my girlfriend, “We’re either breaking up and living for Jesus, or we’re going home and having sex, I’m going to start smoking weed and drinking, we’re going to start going to parties, and we are NEVER going to a church.”
Well, I picked Jesus over that, and am grateful I did.
Jesus has washed away my shameful past, and it is now a great testimony of his saving grace. I’m still far from perfect. In fact, I’m a mess! But because of Jesus, I’m a BEAUTIFUL MESS, and can now live a life of purity and love.
Today, I am writing and playing worship songs while taking Berean Bible courses to gain my credentials as a minister. I aspire to be only what I can describe as a “Musicianary”, that is, a musician that refuses to just write and “play” music, but rather MUST proclaim Christ through radical worship. It is my dream to write worship songs with a vast variety of people, mixing music styles all the way from a cappella hymnals, to hardcore screaming. I want to do this to show the world that worship doesn’t have any one sound or look to it, but that worship is an outpouring of your heart to God, and that can look like ANYTHING.
So there you have it. I was once a prostitute, selling my talents and time to the world, but Jesus sought me out, bought me, and made me His. I am the prostitute in Hosea 3, and Jesus is the husband.
